Why does the NFL use the Wonderlic?

You can all thank this guy, Tom Landry

Tom Landry was the legendary coach of the Dallas Cowboys during the 1960s and 70s, and frequently makes the list of top 10 greatest NFL coaches of all time.

While scouting players, he started making the Wonderlic test a requirement for any players he was considering in the draft as a way to assess their cognitive abilities. Not to be outdone, the NFL made the Wonderlic a part of the Combine, and the rest is history.
